hydrocephalus Flashcards
hydrocephalus is
An increase in the quantity of cerebrospinal fluid
(CSF) related to a hydrodynamic disorder.
consequences of hydrocephalus
–>dilation of brain cavities
–>intracranial hypertension
choroid plexus and spinal sub sub arachnoid space secrete
csf +++
what inhibits secretion of csf?
acetazolamide
where is csf resorbed
by arachnoid villi++ (depends on hydrostatic pressure)
csf circulation order
choroide plexus–>3rd ventricle–>sylvius aqueduct–>4th ventricle–>subarachnoid space
what are the main 3 causes of hydrocephalus
-Hyperproduction
- Obstruction of CSF flow
- Faulty resorption
what are the consequences of ich
–>Macrocrania in infants
–>visual disorders
–>psychomotor retardation (destruction pf parenchyma)
circulation blockage(non communicating hydrocephalus) is due to
non communicating ventricular and arachnoid systems
CSF resorption failure (communicating hydrocephalus)
Arachnoid symphysis, thrombosis of venous sinuses, closing of arachnoid villi
Communicating hydrocephalus (Hgie, Infection)
what indicates the area of blockage
The number of dilated ventricles points to the area of blockage +++
monroe foramen blockage causes
uni or biventricular hydrocephalus
Blockage at the level of Sylvius’ aqueduct
tri-ventricular hydrocéphalus
Blockage at Magendie’s and Luschka’s foramen
tetra-ventricular hydrocéphalus
