Hydrocarbons Flashcards
1
Q
First 8 hydrocarbons in order and formulas?
A
Methane - CH4 Ethane - C2H6 Propane - C3H8 Butane - C4H10 Pentane - C5H12 Hexane - C6H14 Heptane - C7H16 Octane - C8H18
2
Q
But-1-ene displayed formula?
A
H H H H I I I I H - C = C - C - C - H I I H H
3
Q
But-2-ene displayed formula?
A
H H H H I I I I H - C - C = C - C - H I I H H
4
Q
In the testing for alkenes, what are the colours of the alkane and alkene when bromine water is added to the substance?
A
Alkane - Orange
Alkene - Colourless
5
Q
Difference between alkanes and alkenes?
A
- Alkanes are saturated HCs whereas alkenes aren’t.
- Alkanes are compounds with a single bond between the atom whereas alkenes are compounds with one or more double or triple bonds.
6
Q
What does a hydrocarbon + O2 go to?
A
HC + O2 -> H2O + CO2
7
Q
General formula for alkanes and alkenes?
A
Alkane - x = 2n + 2
Alkene - x = 2n
8
Q
Why is there no methene?
A
Because you need a double bond to another carbon atom and there’s only one carbon.
9
Q
Hydrocarbon definition?
A
A compound with hydrogen and carbon
10
Q
Why are alkenes said to be unsaturated?
A
They can bond with more atoms
