Hydraulics Flashcards
What is the equation for calculating torque?
Torque = Force x Length
What is work measured in?
Joules
What is Power? What is its units?
The amount of work done in an amount of time.
Unit is Watts
Who invented the Watt?
James Watt
Also the inventor of the steam engine.
What is Horsepower? How much does 1 HP equal in Metric and Imperial
Another way of measuring Power.
1HP = 746 watts (Metric) 1HP = 33000 ft-lb/min (Imperial)
What do piston rings do?
Control oil consumption, transfer heat and seal gases
What are other names for the Connection Rod Bearings?
Throw Bearings
Big End Bearings
What does the Crankshaft do?
Turns Linear motion of the piston into Rotary motion. It also connects the flywheel with the harmonic balancer.
What does the Camshaft do?
Opens and closes the intake and exhast ports.
What do the Rockerarms do?
Change the direction of motion and open the valves.
What is a Flywheel?
A large wheel on the end of a Crankshaft which stores energy and smooths the power pluses from pistons. Also provides a place to transmit power to other machinery. The heavier the flywheel the smoother the engine runs.
What is a balancer? What are some other names for it?
Is a wheel on the Crankshaft which reduces torsional vibration from the piston.
Harmonic Balancer, Torsional Balancer, Vibration Dampener.
Name a Internal Combustion Engine and a External Combustion Engine
External = Steam Engine
Internal = Gas, Deisel
What is a Engine?
A machine that converts chemical energy in mechancial energy.
What is a Motor?
A mechanical device that converts fluid or electrical energy into mechanical energy.
