Passive hydraulic systems
A
Simple hydraulic systems such as the brake circuit on a light aircraft will be powered by human effort
The force you exert on the brake pedals is translated through small pistons and cylinders into a larger force exerted by the large area pistons operating the brake callipers

A
Sophisticated hydraulic systems use some form of pump to raise hydraulic pressure and cause fluid to flow under pressure
Typically operate in the region of 3000psi

Critical hydraulic systems will have at least one back-up pump to cater for main pump failure
