Hyde Character Flashcards
Hyde key quotes
Ape-like fury
Terror of the gallows
Trampled calmly
Analysis of ape-like fury
This describes Hyde as uncontrollable and violent
Stevenson presents Hyde as a subhuman or not from this world
This gives connotations of the duality of man and how Hyde is the definition of satan and hell
This links to why Dr Jekyll is used to show that not all victorians lived by the strict code and he need to hide Mr Hyde as people would judge him for it
Analysis terror of the gallows
In this quote it’s a bit different then the others as Hyde is actually scared of getting caught for all his crimes which suggests the duality of not just Jekyll and Hyde but also Hyde’s personality as he doesn’t want to get hanged for his crimes. You could link this to how after Hyde tramples the girl he pays ransom money for his crimes so he doesn’t get reported to the police
Analysis trampled calmly
Suggests how Hyde does not care about trampling over the girl
Violent and unfeeling
Trampled suggests that he does it on purpose and because of his evil behaviour he doesn’t care
