Hyde Analysis Flashcards
Damned juggernaut
The adjective ‘damned’ begins a semantic field of hell and evil. The reference to juggernaut suggests he is an unstoppable force which will crush anyone that gets in his way. This foreshadows what he does to Carew later
It wasn’t like a man
Enfield describes him with the pronoun ‘it’, objectifying him
Light footstep
Reinforces that Hyde is described as small and Jekyll as large. In chapter 10 is becomes clear why Hyde is small, because he represses the desires inside of him, Jekyll has not let him grow and tried to suppress them so he can be socially acceptable
Hissing, snarled, savage laugh
Semantic field of animals. Hyde is described as a snake under attack or a snarling dog, he is feral and bestial, savage and not civilised. This supports Freuds theory of having an ID- we all have a primitive side that we try to suppress but comes out every now and then
Pale and dwarfish
He is described as pale because he has been hidden inside Jekyll for so long. Metaphorically kept in the dark and dwarfish because Jekyll has suppressed him all his life
Hardly human , troglodytic
The alliteration hardly human followed with an exclamation, evokes Utterson’s disbelief at what he sees. Troglodytic suggests he’s like a cave man, primitive and undeveloped. Reminds us of Darwins ideas . Stevenson is suggesting that Hyde has not evolved into a civilised human
Satan’s signature
Continuing the semantic field of hell, something satanic seems to exude from his face, reminds us of the Victorian belief is pseudo science of physiognomy, his appearance reflected his moral character
Ape like fury, a storm of blows, bones were audibly shattered
Hyde killing Carew who is a respected member of society. Hyde described as ape like suggesting he has not evolved into a civilised human, he is primitive, the adverb audibly is auditory imagery suggests you could hear the boner breaking. The verb shattered evokes the violence of the murder. These descriptions paint a semantic field of extreme violence, the Id which once is released cannot be restrained
Edward Hyde had grown in stature
As Jekyll loses control of his body and Hyde comes out more, begins to grow and develop. Hyde is becoming larger literally and metaphorically
