delusion
past episodes of both psychiatric and medical illnesses are described; reflects the transition between the story of the present illness and the patient’s personal hx (anamnesis)
past illness
provides for a thorough understanding of the patient’s past and its relations to the present emotional problem
anamnesis
describes the sum total of the examiner’s observations and impressions of the psychiatric pt at the time of the interview; can change from day to day or hour to hour
mental status examination
- refers to both qualitative and quantitative aspects of the pt’s motor behavior
- includes mannerisms, tics, gestures, hyperactivity, agitation, restlessness, gait
overt behavior and psychomotor activity
pervasive and sustained emotion that colors the person’s perception of the world
mood
- patient’s present emotional responsiveness, inferred from the pt’s facial expression, including the amount and range of expressive behavior

affect

- Refers to the way a person puts together ideas and associations; the form in w/c a person thinks
- This may be illogical and coherent or completely illogical and even incomprehensible s/a flight of ideas, looseness of associations, thought blocking, circumstantiality, tangentiality, neologisms, clang associations, etc.

- Refers to what a person is actually thinking about such as ideas, beliefs, preoccupations, obsessions, phobias, etc.
- Ex: The pt is sexually preoccupied

this portion of the MSE seeks to assess the organic brain fx and the pt’s intelligence, capacity for abstract thought, and the level of insight and judgment; important when assessing their capacity to make decisions
