HV Electrical Distribution Flashcards
HV
- Four generators are fitted on the type 45
* Two are driven by gas turbine engines.
Gas Turbine generators
The GT driven generators produce:
- 4.160 kV, 60 Hz, 3Ø and have a capacity of 22 MW
-used to provide power for the whole ship.
In normal operation, only one gas turbine generator is operating.
HV electrical Distribution
Two are driven by Diesel engines
The Diesel driven generators produce:
- 4.160kV, 60Hz, 3Ø and have a capacity of 2 MW.
- Will auto start if the gas turbine generator output drops below a certain level.
- Provide power to start the second gas turbine.
- Provide power for essential systems until the second gas turbine Genesis online.
HV SYSTEM HAS TWO SWITCHBOARDS
PORT switchboard
STARBOARD switchboard
GT circuit
Stage 1
GT driven generator output is fed onto a 4, 16 kV bus bar in each switchboard section.
As usual Fed through their own supply breakers.
Stage 1
Diesel driven generator output is also fed into a 4.16kV bus bar in each switchboard.
The bud bar linking breakers and interconnecting breakers are closed all the time.
Stage 2
The HV is connected to an HV harmonic filter.
This is done through their own harmonic filter feeder breakers.
Harmonic filters
- Harmonic filters are used to ensure the quality requirements of the power supplies.
- These harmonic filters smooth the sine wave of the voltage supply.
- These harmonic filters are cooled via a dedicated air to water heat exchanger.
- The heat exchanger is fed from the ship’s chilled water system.
- In an emergency seawater can be used.
- The heat exchangers must be flushed through following the emergency use of seawater.
Electrical propulsion
- The Type 45 has an integrated electrical propulsion system (IEP).
- The IEP is powered from the 21MW capacity turbine generators.
- The IEP system is commonly referred to as an INTEGRATED ELECTRIC DRIVE.
Stage 3
- Output of the 21MW generator supplied to the bus bar is connected to the 19MW advanced induction propulsion motor.
- This is done through the propulsion motor feeder breaker.
