- Levee defences were too weak and didn’t stop the force of Katrina

- 1,000,000 people became homeless
- 1200 people drowned
- Oil facilities damaged which increased petrol prices in the UK and US
- Poorer people remained in the city despite evacuation order.
- People looted abandoned shops and houses

- People sought refuge in the Superdome stadium
- $50 billion was given in aid by the US government
- UK government sent food aid during early recovery stages
