Ricky’s Birthday Scene

Ricky’s birthday is an important
moment in the fil m as it
demonstrates Ricky’s growing
relationship with Bella. After running
away and feeling out of place he is
coming to realise how much Bella
cares for him. This is captured in the
song that Bella sings for him. He is
also given his dog, Tupac, as a
present. Hec at this point still seems
aloof. However, Ricky remarks “This
is the best birthday I ever had”,
followed by “I think it’s the only
birthday I ever had”. This makes the
death of Bella even worse, as Ricky
was only beginning to settle in his
new surroundings.

1 Ricky is now wearing yellow in film yellow is used to signify joy or naivety
2 Bella’s original birthday song shows her love for Ricky
3 Lighting is used effectively here, Hecs light is more dimmed meaning he is just now warming up while Ricky’s is beaming. The Birthday Candles bring the whole table together
