What is Bikaver?

Where can it be made?

A

Bikaver is a traditional red wine of Hungary.

Can only be made in:

  • Eger PDO* (Észak Moagyarország)
  • Szekszárd PDO* (Dunántú / Transdubia

Must be a blend of at least 3 varietals.
No grape can be less than 5% or more than 50%.

40% min combined:
Kadarka, and Kekfrankos

also allowed:
Kékoportó (aka: Portugeiser), Blauburger,
Zweigelt, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon,
Merlot, Pinot Noir, Menoire, Syrah

10% Max combined:
Turán, Bíborkadarka

~11.5% min ABV~

Bikaver Superior
30-50% min Kekfrankos

5 grapes minimum must be used.
No other grape can exceed 30%

30% Max combined:
Cab Sauv + Cab Franc

No Bíborkadarka!

What is

Districtus Hungaricus Controllatus?
(DHC)

A

A Hungarian system created in 2006 similar to the Austrian DAC system.

Supposed to recognize the best queslity of wines coming out of a region…

It seems only Villány wines labeled as “Prémium” qualify to bear the DHC label.

Label depicts a blossoming Crocus flower.

Villány Prémium Voros wines must be aged in oa for minimum 12 months.
