Humphrey's visual fields interp. Flashcards
Humphrey’s Visual Fields - what does a value of 0 and a value of 50 mean?
- 0 means pt could not see the brightest target
- 50 means the dimmest target was seen
(most values are around 30 - any numbers below this imply a possible visual field defect)
How would you test for fixation loss in Humphrey’s Visual Fields?
the machine tests the blind spot occasionally to check for fixation loss
Humphrey’s Visual Fields - What does Total deviation show?
- shows deviation of pt’s result from that that of age-matched controls
- +ve means pt can see dimmer stimuli than the average
- -ve means decreased sensitivity (eg. cataract)
Spot diagnosis + causes
Non-specific /low reliability / inattention - shows non-specific superior field changes in both eyes
- Causes: old, not interested, poorly positioned
Spot diagnosis + cause
Cloverleaf pattern
- Cause: pt loses attention / falls asleep
Spot diagnosis + cause/conditions can be seen in
Blind spot enlargement
- Can be seen in glaucoma OR papilloedema OR idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH)
Spot diagnosis + condition seen in
Nasal step (shows an inferior nasal step)
- Characteristic of early glaucomatous field loss
Spot diagnosis + condition seen in
Superior / Inferior arcuate defect - resembles an arc that comes off the blind spot which represents the loss of nerve bundles that come out of the optic disc
- Early-to-mid-stage glaucomatous field
Spot diagnosis + condition seen in + what visual fields have been lost
Severe constriction with a central island
- End-stage glaucoma
- Peripheral vision is lost, but central vision remains good (6/6)
Spot diagnosis + condition seen in
Superior arcuate defect - looks like an arc
- early-to-mid stage of glaucoma
Spot diagnosis + condition seen in + what visual fields have been lost?
Severe constriction with a central island
- end-stage glaucoma
- most of peripheral vision gone but central vision still good (6/6)
Spot diagnosis + condition seen in
Superior and inferior arcuate defects
- Glaucoma
Spot diagnosis
Complete right homonymous hemianopia
- ?Stroke
Spot diagnosis
Left-sided homonymous hemianopia
Spot diagnosis
Dense left hemianopia with scattered inferior and superior nasal defects
