2
Q

What are the similarities and differences between hunting and gathering

A

Both foraging forms gain a similar average of calorific return but hunting is more unpredictable but potentially more gain

3
Q

Why would females hunt and males gather

A

Females may have their mobility redistricted due to feeding offspring

Q

What is the relationship between hunting success and fitness benefits to wives and children in Ache foragers

A

If you’re female and are partnered with a good hunter husband, bot you and your children gain efficiently

6
Q

Why would it benefit a male to share food outside of his family

A

residual social benefits such as forming alliances with other males and reproductive opportunities with females

7
Q

Why does it benefit a male to be a good hunter

A

It ables him to realise his fitness potential

Q

How did foraging techniques affect total fertility rate

A

Agriculturalists have a greater total fertility rate than foragers and horticulturalists

Q

What is the relationship between agricultural success in the Kipsigis and female reproductive fitness

A

Females marrying men with more land have more children who are healthier

Q

Example of natural selection favouring the requirement of resources

A

Pettay et al 2007 found the poorer (less resourced) preindustrial women did not live as long, and had less children and grandchildren than the rich

11
Q

Why do men prioritise youth in females

A

Younger females are more fecund and thus males will achieve a greater reproductive fitness

Q

Why is menopause on odd thing

A

It doesn’t follow senescence theory, why should the body be maintained so long after reproduction stops

Q

Evidence for fitness benefits of prolonged post-reproductive lifespan in women

A

A study on pre-industrial finnish and Canadian families found that grandmothers who lived longer had more grandchildren (controlling for socioeconomic effects)

14
Q

What are the grandmother fitness benefits

A

(a & b) Women had more children when their own mother was alive
(c) More grandchildren born when grandmother remained local
(d) Women started reproducing younger when their own mother remained alive
(e) Women had a shorter inter-birth interval (for their first 3 children) when their own mother remained alive
(f) Grandchildren had higher survival when their
grandmother was alive,
and younger

16
Q

Why aren’t humans behaving opitmally in terms of reproduction

A

Even though wealth are resources are going up, fertility is going down, and their is a negative relationship between family income and fertility

17
Q

Example of extrinsic mortality correlating with timing of reproduction

A

Contemporary study comparing 77 neighbourhoods across Chicago
100-fold life-expectancy variation (due to homicide) across the comparison
Lower life-expectancy in mothers = earlier onset of reproduction
ie If you are likely to die young due to homicide, you tend to reproduce a lot earlier

18
Q

What should one consider about wealth/ resources and reproductive success

A

If wealth/resources BUY reproductive success, then bigger inheritances may maximise reproductive output (= # grandchildren) if left to sons

19
Q

What did Buss 1994 find partner age preference to be

A

Women prefer partners to be 4 years older, males, 7-5 years younger

20
Q

Evidence to suggest humans

A

Males have a slightly bigger testes compared to body weight

21
Q

Evidence MCH-dependent mate preferences in humans

A

1) 49 female students and 44 male students were genotyped for their MHC complex.
2) males were asked not to shower/perfume for 2 days and wear a standard t-shirt while sleeping
3) women were asked to rate the odour of 6 t-shirts. Wedekind recorded which women were taking oral contraceptives
Women prefer MHC dissimilar male odours but women on the pill showed no preference
