humanities vocab Flashcards
Militarism
Building up armed forces and getting ready for war.
Nations believed a successful nation had a powerful military. This led to an arms race between countries. Everyone kept producing more and more weapons in order to be the strongest.
The Result: 20 million dead
Alliances
Agreements or promises to help or defend another country.
Most countries had alliances with other nations based on their national interests. Alliances were usually made between individual nations, not groups of nations.
The Result: Countries ended up fighting about issues that had nothing to do with them simply because they were bound to honor their alliances.
Imperialism
The policy of extending a nation’s power and influence by acquiring territory or economic influence in a region.
The Result: The Scramble for Africa and European expansion in China (which was weak and collapsing). Imperialism brought resources, markets, territory, and power. Before WW1, many countries were trying to either gain/expand their empire or avoid being a part of someone else’s empire.
Nationalism
Identifying with one’s own nation and supporting its interests, often to the detriment of others.
Nationalism can be heroic but it also can be cruel by believing your nation is the only thing that matters.
The Result: Nations fought to expand their own self-interests and gain power or control over others.
