Definition
The humanistic approach emphasizes the personal worth of the individual, the centrality of human values, and the creative, active nature of human beings.
Assumptions
The scientific method is not appropriate to measure behaviour.
People should be viewed hollistically.
Free will. We choose and have control over our behaviour.
Every individual is unique.
Self-actualisation
Achieving the ultimate feeling of well-being.
Rogers: Focus on the self
- Self-concept - The way you see yourself
- The ideal self - The self you wish to be
- The real self - Who you actually are
Congruence
When yourselves are the same as eachother.
Unconditional positive regard
Being loved by who you are by someone else. Total acceptance recieved by another person.
Conditional positive regard
Individuals feel they need to meet requirements to be loved.

Counselling psychology
A relationship where the therapist can make the client feel accepted and comfortable.
Advantages
Not reductionists, holistic approach
Optimistic approach
Free-will
Places individual’s subjective experiences and meaning at the centre.
Promotes the idea of personal reponsability
Client-centered therapy is used nowadays.
Disadvantages
Not scientific, hard to falsify, unfalsifiable
Emphasises on conscious awareness
Too positive regarding human behaviour.
