Explain Hierarchy of Needs

A

Maslow focuses on the importance of personal growth and fulfillment of needs. His hierarchy of needs can be represented as a pyramid.
The most basic, deficit needs’ (Physiological and safety)
are at the base followed by love and belongingness and esteem needs.
Each level must be fulfilled before a person can move up to the highest ‘growth need’ of self-actualisation.

Explain Self-Actualisation

A

Maslow described self-actualisers as creative, accepting of others and accurate percievers of the world around them. They have peak experiences.

Self-Actualisation is described when a persons ‘ideal self’ is congruent with their real self and they come a fully functioning person.

Explain the self and self-congruence

A
The self (how we perceive ourselves; #ideal self' what we aspire to be.
Congruence occurs when these match well, leading to feelings of self-worth. A poor match leads to incongruence and lower self-worth. Complete congruence is rare and people may thus use defense mechanisms to protect themselves from the discomfort of incongruence.

Rogers developed the client-centered approach to counselling. He argued that with support we could solve our own problems. Becoming a fully functioning person and potentially achieve self-actualiation. Counsellors provide a supportive environment aimed at dissolving condition of worth moving the client toward authenticity and self-congruence.
