Q

referring to two assumptions of the humanistic approach, explain why humanistic psychologists have rejected the scientific method (4)

A

all humans have free will to make choices - the scientific method is deterministic so it assumes all behaviour has an identifiable cause and that humans have no control over behaviour. humanists reject this as they assume humans need free will to self actualise.
all humans are unique - the scientific methods compared individuals to make general laws of behaviour. humanists reject this as they do not believe in comparing subjective experiences.

Q

outline what is meant by congruence - explain one way in which Dominic might achieve congruence (4)

A

congruence is the similarity between self concept and ideal self - Dominic needs to close the gap between the two by developing a more healthy view of himself, or receiving unconditional positive regard from his therapist.
