humanistic approach Flashcards
what is client-centred therapy?
in order to reduce the gap between the self-concept and ideal self, Rogers create the CCT. he said issues we face as adults originate from childhood and can be explained by a lack of unconditional positive regard by parents. a parent who imposes conditions of worth is storing up psychological problems in the child.
what are the hierarchies of needs?
MASLOW
1) psychological needs
2) safety and security
3) love and belonging
4) self-esteem
5) self-actualisation
order = bottom to top
what did Carl Rogers argue?
In order for personal growth to be achieved an individual’s concept of self must be broadly equivalent to or have congruence with their ideal self. if there is two big of a gap between the ‘two selves’ then the person will experience a state of incongruence or self-actualisation won’t be possible
what is humanistic psychology?
an approach to understanding behaviour that emphasises the importance of subjective experience and each person’s capacity for self-actualisation
what is free will?
the notion that humans can make choices and are not determined by internal biological or external forces
what is self-actualisation?
the desire to grow psychologically and fulfil one’s full potential
what is hierarchy of needs?
a five-levelled hierarchical sequence in which basic physiological needs must be satisfied before higher psychological needs can be achieved
what is congruence?
the aim of Rogerian therapy, when the self-concept and ideal self are seen to broadly match
what is self?
the ideas and values that characterise
T’ and ‘me’ and includes perception and valuing of ‘what I am.’
what is conditions of worth?
when a parent places limits or boundaries on children e.g. “I’ll only love you if you become a doctor.”
one strength of the humanistic approach
P: the humanistic approach can be applied to real-world applications
E: Roger’s client-centred therapy is an important form of modern-day psychotherapy leading to the general idea of counselling which is applied to lots of settings
today
T: this allows a better understanding of patients needs can be applied and improve health outcomes plus education.
one weakness of the humanistic approach
P: humanistic psychology can be considered non-scientific.
E: due to the lack of empirical evidence and reliance on non-experimental qualitative methods.
T: the concepts in the humanistic approach are criticised for lack of operationalism meaning they aren’t defined by measurable terms. Low validity.
