Humanistic Approach Flashcards
describe the humanistic approach in a few words.
personal growth, self-actualisation and active agents.
How does the Humanistic approach explain behaviour?
It claims we can determine our own development with our free will and client-centred therapy.
What is Maslow’s hierarchy of needs?
It shows 4 levels that must be met for somebody to self-actualise.
what’s at the bottom of Maslow’s hierarchy?
the basic needs for survival.
what is the second rank of Maslow’s hierarchy?
physical and psychological safety needs
what is the third rank of Maslow’s hierarchy?
love and belonging
what is the top rank of Maslow’s hierarchy?
self-esteem needs for a sense of achievement.
What does Rogers say about congruence?
Rogers said there must be congruence between your ideal-self and self-concept for you to have high self esteem.
How does Rogers help people with incongruence?
Through client-centred therapy and the unconditional love someone didn’t receive as a child.
strength-positive approach
promotes a positive image of the human condition and says we’re free to self-actualise rather than being prisoners of our past like freud said.
weakness-cultural bias
Central ideas like personal growth are associated with individualist societies whereas collectivist societies don’t emphasise it. So, it’s not a universal theory.
weakness-limited application
There’s a small impact compared to the behaviourist and biological approaches. Humanistic psychology is more a loose set of abstract ideas than a theory. However Rogerian therapy revolutionised counselling.
