3 Aspects of Rogers Work
Method of counselling
* Theory of personality
* Ideas about the good life
congruence
therapist being authentic ,
unconditional positive regard
deep and genuine caring for the client
(that is without strings attached). “I will accept you as you are.
empathy
put myself in the other person’s shoes. To sensitively and
accurately understand the client’s experience.
Necessary and sufficient conditions for
therapeutic personality change
- Congruence: the therapist is authentic, not putting on a façade.
- Unconditional positive regard: deep and genuine caring for the client
(that is without strings attached). “I will accept you as you are.” - Empathy: put myself in the other person’s shoes. To sensitively and
accurately understand the client’s experience.
Organismic valuing
process
Rogers used to say we have an innate ability
to know what is best for us, our best direction
Rollo May
rollo may , wanted us to live our authentic lives
Existential therapy
self-actualize
to fulfill one’s potential and achieve the highest level of
‘human-beingness’ we can.
Existential Therapy ROLLO MAY
Existential therapy emphasizes the choices to be made in the present
and future and enabling a new freedom and responsibility to act. By
accepting limitations and mortality, a client can overcome anxieties
and instead view life as moments in which he or she is fundamentally
free.
on our freedom to choose the life we want, our
anxiety about death and things we can’t control.
Fritz Perls:
Gestalt Therapy
Gestalt therapy
- Gestalt therapy is a form of psychotherapy that is centered on
increasing a person’s awareness, freedom, and self-direction. It’s a
form of therapy that focuses on the present moment rather than past
experiences.
Mary Stark Whitehouse
authentic movement , more than just talking
Whitehouse was into using movement
Hierarchy of needs
“Maslow called the bottom four levels of the pyramid deficiency needs
because a person does not feel anything if they are met, but becomes
anxious if they are not. Thus, physiological needs such as eating, drinking,
and sleeping are deficiency needs, as are safety needs, social needs such as
friendship and sexual intimacy, and ego needs such as self-esteem and
recognition.”
* “ In contrast, Maslow called the fifth level of the pyramid a growth need[2]
because it enables a person to self-actualize or reach his or her fullest
potential as a human being. Once a person has met the deficiency needs,
he or she can attend to self-actualization; however, only a small minority of
people are able to self-actualize because self-actualization requires
uncommon qualities such as honesty, independence, awareness,
objectivity, creativity, and originality.”
