Definition of Human Trafficking
Human trafficking is compelling someone to work OR to engage in a commercial sex act.
What is the Trafficing Victims Protection Act (TVPA) of 2000?
Provides a 3 pronged approach that includes: prevention, protection and prosecution. Created to ensure just and effective punishment of traffickers, and to protect their victims.
Indicators of Human Trafficking
- Surveillance Equipment
- Locks, fences, reatraints or guards
- Lack of access to travel or immigration docs
- Unaccompanied minors w/out guardians
- Commercial sex paraphernalia
- Visible signs of physical violence or abuse
- One person speaking for everyone
- Forbidden to socialize
- Overmedicated
Who do you report Human Trafficking to?
- Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE)
- Local law enforcement (911)
- Human trafficking hotline (befree)
What is Continued Presence?
Allows foreign victims of human trafficking to remain in the US temporarily during the ongoing investigation of trafficking-related crimes committed against them in the US.
What is a T Visa used for?
Specifically for victims of sex or labor trafficking
What is a U Visa?
Used to protect and encourage victims of qualifying crimes to report these crimes to law enforcement, thereby helping law enforcement detect, investigate, and prosecute crimes.
