Human Sexual Reproductive System Flashcards

The nucleus of the EGG CELL FUSES with the nucleus of the SPERM CELL.
Male reproductive parts?
Sperm duct Urethra Testes Scrotum Male sex glands Penis
Female reproductive parts?
Fallopian tube / Oviduct Ovary Uterus Cervix Vagina
Menstruation?
Day 1-5
Repair and Growth of Uterus Lining?
Day 6-10
Fertile Period?
Day 11-17
Ovulation?
Day 14
Further thickening of the uterine lining?
Day 18-28
Abstinence ?
Not having sexual intercourse at all
Rhythm method?
Couples do not have sexual intercourse during the fertile period of the women’s menstrual cycle
Spermicide?
A chemical that kills or blocks sperms from entering the uterus to prevent fertilisation
Diaphragm?
A dome-shaped rubber cap with an elastic rim that is inserted into the vagina and placed over the cervix to prevent fertilisation.
Condom?
A thin rubber tube used to cover the erect penis before sexual intercourse. The condom is impermeable to sperms hence sperms cannot enter the uterus and no fertilisation occurs.
Intra-uterine Device (IUD)?
A piece of plastic / metal that is inserted into the uterus. It prevents the embryo from being implanted into the uterine lining.
Contraceptive Pills?
Medication containing female sex hormones which prevents ovulation. The ovary is prevented from releasing a mature egg each month.
Vasectomy?
A surgery that involves tying and cutting of the sperm ducts. Sperms will not be ejaculated during sexual intercourse ; hence fertilisation will not occur.
Tubal Ligation?
A surgery that involves tying and cutting both oviducts which prevents the egg from meeting the sperm ; hence fertilisation will not occur.
Fallopian tube / Oviduct?
A narrow muscular tube connecting the OVARY to the UTERUS
Ovary?
An organ which produces MATURE EGGS AND FEMALE SEX HORMONES
Uterus?
An organ where the fetus DEVELOPS. It has elastic muscular walls that enable CONTRACTION during birth TO EXPEL THE FETUS.
Cervix?
The CIRCULAR RING OF MUSCLE at the lower end of the uterus
Vagina?
The location where semen is deposited during sexual intercourse
Male sex glands?
An organ which SECRETES A FLUID CONTAINING NUTRIENTS AND ENZYMES which PROVIDE ENERGY FOR THE SPERMS TO MOVE
Sperm duct?
A MUSCULAR TUBE that CARRIES / TRANSPORTS SPERMS from TESTIS to the URETHRA
Penis?
An ERECTILE organ that becomes erect and hard during sexual intercourse in order to enter and deposit semen into the vagina
Urethra?
A tube that extends from the bladder, through the penis, to the outside body. Both SEMEN and URINE exit the body through the urethra, but never at the same time.
Testis?
Plural - Testes
An organ that PRODUCES SPERMS and MALE SEX HORMONES
Scrotum?
Scrotum pouch-like sacs located OUTSIDE the body cavity to help maintain a lower temperature for the development of sperms
