Prerogatives all human beings have simply bi virtue of being human
Which are the three characteristics of human rights?
-Universal -Indivisible -Inalienable
What does it mean when saying human rights are universal?
All humans deserve human rights equally - they’re not subject to being a citizen of certain states
What does it mean when saying human rights are inalienable?
They are acquired at birth & individuals cannot lose them by any act they commit
What does it mean when saying human rights are indivisible?
All human rights are inherent to human dignity, and thus they cannot be positioned in a hierarchical order or enjoyed independently
What is the main intention of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights?
To create an international regime to secure human dignity
What are legal rights?
Rights recognized by the state in its laws
What is positive freedom?
Not being prevented from doing something, but also being able to act by your own will
What is negative freedom?
Not mere incapacity, but being prevented from doing something by institutions
What do positive human rights involve?
Involve the state facilitating self-realization through action (give you tools to do something)
What do negative human rights involve?
Involve the state not stopping individuals from doing something
What is the poverty cycle?
