What is the UN?

A

The United Nations organisation. An organisation made up of world leaders that aim to maintain peace, promote economic and social development and protect human rights so that another war doesn’t break out

A

The declaration of human rights. A set of standards made by the UN for behaviour so that all people receive the same rights

When did human rights abuses start happening?

A

When the African countries gained independence abuses started to occur. Eg child soldiers

Who are child soldiers?

A

Children under the age of 18 are forced to become soldiers and fight during wars. Some children join voluntarily to generate an income, for security, belonging or maybe their family was killed.

What happens when you are a child soldier?

A

Live under harsh conditions with little food or health care. They are beaten and tortured to preform hard labour

What happens to the survivors after wars?

A

They have to go to rehabilitation centres to live a Norma life after being severely mentally and physically hurt. Usually get orphaned as their family may have been killed in the war so they have no where to live. Their opportunities are limited in the future as they have missed their educations.

Why do they choose children?

A

They are easy to influence, cost less, can’t tell the difference between right and wrong, they don’t know the severity of war & death, they can be replaced and they are obedient

A

Punish people and places that recruit children for war, make laws against it, work on reintegration programs for the children eg shelter and counselling

What is the red hand day?

A

An campaign that aims to stop the use of child soldiers in wars. It is on the 12th of February every year. Many organisations support this project.

A

Straight 18 - no child under the age of 18 can be used in armies

A

Punishment of responsible parties - countries or groups must be punished before the ICC and given punishments for their actions

A

Protection, assistance and political asylum - survivors need to be provided with assistance (mentally & physically) and reintegration methods to help the children. Shelter and protection is required

A

More funds for child soldiers aid programmes - more money needs to be donated towards reintegration programmes and the prevention of child soldiers

A

Ban on arms exports - countries are not allowed to send weapons to places that need them and all illegal trade routes need to be shut down.

A

Promote peace education - peace education and negotiations should be a compulsory part of the school curriculum.

It is when rights are not respected and violations occur, eg. A genocide They happen for political reasons.

The deliberate killing of a large group of people especially those of a particular nation, ethnic or culture group.
