human rights Flashcards
Give three reasons why Christians would teach the dignity of human life.
God created all humans in “his image”.
Jesus taught that humans will be judged on how well they have preserved the dignity of other humans e.g. Parable of the sheep and the goats the sheep are judged well because “I was thirsty and you gave me water.”
Jesus himself always treated even the outcasts with dignity e.g healed lepers and the blind.
10 commandments show that God wants humans to be treated with dignity. You shall not kill, steal or commit adultery. All humans should have the right to life, their possessions and marital partner.
Give three reasons why Buddhists would teach the dignity of human life.
Mahayana Buddhists believe all humans have a Buddha nature and can achieve enlightenment so should be treated with dignity.
Dharma-8 fold path and five precepts-right action and speech must be motivated by metta and 1st precept-non harm to all suggests treating humans with dignity.
Pratitya-eveything is interconnected. Humans must set up conditions to end suffering and they can do this by treating people with dignity through skilful acts. If they don’t, then all conditioned things will suffer.
“Let none by anger or hatred wish harm to another.” Buddha i.e. no one should wish for the undignified treatment of another.
Give three reasons why Christians would support agape in action and promotion of human rights.. (see also dignity of human life)
Jesus said “No greater love has man than when he lays down his life for another.”
The Bible instructs believers to “Speak up for those who have no voice.”
Jesus said “blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness.
Amos “Let justice roll on like a river
Give three reasons why Buddhists would support practices which promote human rights-see dignity of human life too.
They are skilful acts because they are driven by metta an karuna.
The Buddha taught the middle path. When human rights are taken away, this is not a middle path e.g. no shelter, no food and without the middle path, people cannot achieve enlightenment.
Buddha said “I teach suffering and the end of suffering.”
Give two examples of conflict between personal conviction and the laws of a country.
Give three ways in which this example fought the laws of the country.
Martin Luther King
BR Ambedkar
Leading bus and café boycotts where black and white people were separated.
Boycotting buying goods from known racist businesses.
Marches-e.g. on Washington.
Speeches e.g. “I have a dream…”
BR Ambedkar.
Weekly journal which condemned the caste system called Mook Nayak.
Peaceful protest march
Burnt the Hindu scriptures which promoted the caste system
Represented the untouchables in court to support their rights e.g. to drink at public water fountains
Give three reasons why they fought the laws of the country.
Following the example of Jesus-Jesus was willing to sacrifice his life for the sins of mankind. MLK was willing to sacrifice his life to fighting against injustice.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness.
Jesus spoke out when he saw in justice e.g. called the Pharisees “Snakes,” Christians must speak out when they see in justices.
Ambedkar
1st precept Avoid harming living beings-caste system was harmful
Right speech-be honest in your speech
Motivated by karuna-have compassion for those who are suffering.
I teach suffering and the end of suffering
Give three relevant Christian teachings to do with censorship, freedom of religious expression and extremism.
Jesus said “Go into the world and preach the gospel to all creation”
Jesus spoke out when thought something was wrong e.g.Called the Pharisees snakes
Jesus said “no one can get to the father, except through me.”
Love thy neighbour and treat others
Give three relevant Buddhist teachings to do with censorship, freedom of religious expression and extremism.
Right Speech on the 8 fold path and 4th precept-be honest in your speech. speechnot driven by three poisons.
Censorship and restricting freedom of expression may not be being mindful. Not considering where others are coming from.
Extremism breaks the first precept-non harm to all living beings.
Give three reasons why Christians would disagree with racial prejudice and discrimination.
There is neither Jew not gentile, male nor female…for we are all one in faith in Jesus. St Paul.
Parable of the good Samaritan- People should be judged by what they do, not their race.
Jesus healed a Roman Centurian’s servant and allowed a black African to carry his cross.
“All humans are created in the image of God. Genesis.
State two teachings of Martin Luther King on equality.
We either learn to live together or “perish like fools”
If a law is unjust and promotes inequality, you should follow your conscience and break it (as Jesus did healing on the Sabbath).
He wanted to see a world where his children were judged by their character, not their race.
Give three reasons why Buddhists would disagree with discrimination and racial discrimination.
Discrimination is based on prejudice which comes from ignorance-one of the three poisons so is wrong.
Racial speech and action goes against Right speech and Right action of the 8 fold path.
Racist speech or any speech which discriminates is false speech and so breaks the fourth precept to be honest in your speech.
All people are capable of enlightenment regardless of race, wealth, gender etc. and should be treated as such.
Give Christian teachings on the acquisition and use of Wealth.
Jesus said “Go and sell all that you have and give it to the poor.”
Parable of the Sheep and the Goats shows that wealth should be used to help those in need. “I was thirsty and you gave me water.”
“Love of money is the root of all evil” In the Bible-shows that Christians should not be attached to money.
Give three Buddhist teachings on the acquisition and use of Wealth.
The Buddha’s own experience showed that a life of luxury did not end suffering and neither did a life of poverty. People should live a middle path for enlightenment and help others to do so.
Lay people are encouraged to be charitable and give to the monks. This is good karma.
Attitude to wealth matters-one must not be attached to it as this is tanha and leads to the three poisons. Must follow the 8 fold path to overcome this.
Buddhists are encouraged to be generous-it is the second precept-give generously and do not take what is not freely given.
Give four features of the work of Tear Fund and next to each, a Christian teaching which supports it.
Emergency Aid e.g. in Syria-giving out blankets and food-parable of the sheep and the goats.
Long term Aid-building bridges across marshy land over seas-Parable of the Talents which shows that Christians should use their talents wisely.
Speaking out against corrupt governments and raising awareness of social injustice “speak up for those who have no voice.”
Encouragement of fundraising-Go and sell all that you have and give it to the poor
