To consolidate and simplify anti-discrimination law in the U.K. And to reduce complications arising from having too many separate pieces of legislation

To reduce inequalities in the working environment
When did the health and safety at work Act come into force?
1974
What are the aims of the health and safety at work Act?
To raise the standard of health and safety in the workplace for all workers and to protect the public whose safety may be put at risk by the actions of people at work
What does the employer have to do under the health and safety at work Act?
They must make sure that:
They take every reasonable step to ensure that all machinery is properly maintained
All hazardous substances are dealt with properly
All staff are trained and informed of any potential dangers
The environment is safe and non- hazardous to the health of the employees
This may involve risk assessments, and appointing safety officers to inspect the work place
What does the employee have to do under the health and safety at work Act?
They must behave in a responsible manner at work
Take some responsibility for their own actions
Co-operate with their employers in ensuring that all health and safety requirements are met

1998
What is the national minimum wage act?
It states the minimum wage that must be payed to employees
What are examples of the UK minimum wage?
The UK minimum wage is dependant on age, for example

What is the employment rights act?
It states the duties and rights of the employer and the employees.
What are some examples of rights included in the employment rights act?
Employee rights to paternity and maternity leave

The right to a written contract of employment within 60 days of starting work
