What is Hierarchy?
Layers, with certain jobs within the organisation having authority over others in the hierarchy
What are the 4 levels in business hierarchy?

What is delayering?
When an organisation decides to remove a layer in the hierarchy
What is the chain of command?
It is the line of communication from the top of the hierarchy all the way to the bottom of the hierarchy
What is delegation?
It means giving responsibility for certain tasks or functions to someone lower down in the organisational hierarchy
What is the span of control?
It is the number of employees that a person in a position of power is responsible for
What is a tall organisational structure?
It is a hierarchy with a long chain of command in the organisation
What is a flat organisational structure?
Where there are less layers in the organisational hierarchy
What is internal recruitment?
A job position is advertised to people who already work at a business
What is external recruitment?
When a business looks for new people outside of the organisation to fill a specific position.
What are the four main stages of recruitment?

What is a job share?
When two people share a full time job.
What is part time
A form of employment where people work less hours per week than people with a full-time job
What is a full time job?
Where the employee will work a minimum number of hours. This number is defined by the contract
What is a zero hour contract?
Where a business does not have to give a person any work at all and the employee doesn’t have to accept any work offered to them
What are some financial methods of motivation?

What is commission?
It is paid out a percentage of the sales that staff make
What is profit sharing?
It is when a company profits are divided between the employees

What is Autonomy?
It is the amount of freedom to do your job that your manager provides.
What does training a workforce increase?
Productivity Ability to deal with new technology Motivation High quality output Staff retention
What is induction training?
When employees first arrive at a firm. It introduces them to the firm and provides initial training for their role.
What is on-the-job-training?
The employee learns how to do the job to a high standard while actually doing the job
