Q

How I came to where Inam now in my flying career?

A

My grandpa took me out to the airport everyday and every year I attended Oshkosh. Everyone in school knew I wanted to become a pilot and I received my private pilots license the summer before I left for school and I received all the rest of my training from there when I was 18. I moved south down to Houston to become a flight instructor there to fly as much as I could to build hours to get an entry level job into the regional airlines. I flew as first officer to build time to upgrade and be a Captain for 2 years now. Even now I go out to the airport at DFW and watch planes with my wife.

Q

Describe the kind of pilot you are in one minute.

A

Safe, conservative, and professional. I strive to follow SOP’s and company policies. I always try to make my First Officer mistakes a teaching moment other than a talking to. People learn way more from that. I love being around people and getting them from point A to point B. It makes every flight a achievement.

Q

You was at Mesa for 4 years. Why did you leave?

A

I became a First Officer for Mesa Airlines and then I gained my hours to be able to upgrade in less than 2 years. I had to wait a few months for my seniority to hit for upgrade. I’ve been a Captain for 2 years now and I have been gaining experience, CRM and leadership skills every day I fly.

Q

What do you do to mentor future aviators?

A

When I was a CFI I always tried to make sure what my students was doing there was a reason for it. They had a much better understanding why they was doing it. Even now that I’m a Captain at Mesa I try to help guide the First Officer to learn as much as they can until they upgrade to Captain. I back up what I say with reason and where they can find that information or themselves so they can see as well.

Q

Have you failed a check ride?

A

Yes, I have had 5 total but the short comings I had early in my career made me a better pilot that I am today. I have applied what I learned to make sure I take my time in emergency situations, no trucking my self, properly correcting for a reroute, proper flight planning, and aircraft performance. Since I have come into the professional world I have not had any failures and have gotten compliments every time I have been to recurrent training.

Q

Why do you want to work at Frontier?

A

I would have a much better opportunity to provide for my family. Frontier Airlines has a very unique paint scheme with every plane has a different animals on the tail and I really like that aspect. The people at Frontier are very professional, friendly and enthusiastic. I really support the ultra-low cost model and feels like that is very popular. It gives more opportunity to families that wouldn’t normally spend for the airline ticket to buy one and get to there vacation or destinations more affordable and providing the same it not better service and safety than anyone else. I would really like to be apart of a growing airline and help them to succeed and become more well known.

What if DL, United or FED EX calls while you’re in training?

A

I would say thank you, but no thank you, I committed to Frontier Airlines and I would like to pursue this job hiring. I had to do the same thing to Compass Airlines while I was in training with Mesa. I loved the people I was there with and I was very happy with the job I was at. If I am happy where I am at there is no reason for me to go any where else.

A

Well I would make me look like Chris Hemsworth. I would like to have a bigger muscle mass. Have always been on the smaller side.

38
Q

Tell me about the worst job you ever had

A

It was a lot like a person on an assembly line. It was doing mindless stacking of boxes on specific pallets. They never let me adventure out from there. I learned a lot from it though about sometimes you think some stuff that’s even mindless doesn’t matter but they really do.

Customer service and operating equipment at its most fuel efficient settings like using cost index, single engine taxi, and on time performance

40
Q

You meet downstairs after an overnight the CA isn’t feeling well, you suspect he’s intoxicated, he insists he’s fine, what do you do?

A

Ask him to call out sick. If he refuses, I’d have to take it up with a superior. Work it up properly, fight as much as you can but you are not going to go.

A

George Washington, because he was a founding father of this great nation that we live in. I have have a lot of respect for that.

A

Turning off the APU on turns, single engine taxi, cost index, on time performance

48
Q

Tell me about the most annoying captain you’ve flown with.

A

Yes, I have interactions with those CA’s and it was a struggle and disagreements on stuff and made it difficult trip, but I didn’t allow it to make it outside the cockpit or effect my job duties. The issue stays with us always.

49
Q

Tell me about s time you had a conflict with a Captain.

A

One morning it was reporting snow on the ATIS and you can see it on the windscreen. It was dark out and hard to see. I did my walk around as FO and didn’t see any form of ICE accumulation or freezing quite yet. I told the CA I didn’t see any ice on the wings. He insisted on going without any deice or anti ice. I told him it’s 31 degrees out and I mentioned to do it just in case because if something happens we are going to be liable for that and we both agreed that it would be best to get sprayed just in case.

50
Q

Tell us about a mistake you make and how you rectified it.

A

There has been a time where we went through the after start check list and I have a flow of checking the rudder and arming the nose wheel steering switch. When we read the checklist when it came time to respond to the armed nose wheel switch I looked down at it and I never armed it. I switched it on immediately as I saw the error of not arming the switch.

51
Q

Tell me about time you went above and beyond for a customer.

A

I just got off a flight and I had just a little time to get to my next flight and get food and I saw this older lady having trouble finding her gate and no one to help her escort to her gate. She didn’t speak English. I looked at her ticket and I escorted her to where she needed to go and I also got a person to speak Spanish for her when I dropped her off at her gate.

Q

What type of person do you dislike working with?

A

Dishonest and lazy people.

54
Q

What have you learned as a Captain that you didn’t as a First Officer?

A

A much better understanding of SOP’s and really a major improvement in my CRM skills. Also I learned more into what runs an airline.

55
Q

Are you a good pilot or a great pilot?

A

I wouldn’t say great pilot because I feel like that category is in line of Chuck Yeager, Charles Lindbergh, and even Amelia Earhart. I’m a good pilot. I always try to do my absolute best and hold myself to a very high standard while conducting anything to do with the flight at its most safe form. I have a proven record and my pilot training and promotions. I always have room for improvement.

56
Q

What do you look for in a crew member?

A

Being able to work together and do the job safely.

57
Q

What annoys you in a crew member?

A

Dishonest and lazy, they are usually the people that can’t work together and can’t do the job safely. When people don’t get along the others start to shut down. CRM skills and safety becomes and issue.

58
Q

What SOP at your current company would you change?

A

Not sitting ready reserve for 12 hours. Short call out should be a 2 hr call out instead of 15 mins.

59
Q

How do you define success in aviation?

A

Flying safe and yet being a team player, look back with no regrets.

60
Q

During the walk around at an outstation you notice the right tire has a flat spot on with cord showing. Captain says he doesn’t care and thinks you’re over reacting about it. What do you do?

A

Fight it and have someone look at it for safety. Make sure you are comfortable and don’t change your answer.

61
Q

The captain doesn’t want to go missed and what do you say/do? Do you say something after? Do you report it?

A

Call it a few times. Don’t want to fight it at low altitudes and just let him land it then call the chief pilot and do an ASAP and follow up and call off the trip

62
Q

The captain wants to go on a 5 hr flight, full pax, although all lavs are(legally) differed per MEL….what do you do?

A

I refuse against the desire of everyone. Can take a vote or just straight refuse depending on the time of flight.

63
Q

Tell us about a difficult pilot you flew with. What issues did you have? How did you address them?

A

A pilot who had poor communication skills. I found a way to open him up and get him to start talking. I don’t let it effect the safety of the flight.

64
Q

Tell us your favorite memory item.

A

Rejected T/O
Simultaneously

Thrust levers - IDLE

Wheel brakes - Maximum until sage stop

Thrust reverser(s)[operating engine(s)] - Maximum, consistent with directional control

65
Q

Tell me about a time you were given instructions and something bad happened, and what you learned from it.

A

Still working on it

66
Q

How would you prep yourself to be a captain at a major airline over the next three years?

A

Study company SOP’s, FAR’s, and aircraft limitations. Be confident in emergency procedures to handle anything that comes at you. Learning from every flight. Take pros and cons of CA’s. Always ready to learn every day.

67
Q

What would you do if you had to take off with frost on the wings?

A

They’re just looking to make sure at some point you hit the brakes and say no way, back to the gate. Then tell them you’d call the chief pilot and say something about SOP’s

68
Q

Tell me about a time you had a conflict with a coworker.

A

I had a time when I picked up a few round trips and I had 2 brand new FA’s straight out of training. They wanted me to call them silly names over the PA. I told them really nicely that I’m not going to do that and that’s not very professional. They didn’t seem to like it and they started to give me a cold shoulder. I did my business like normal and I didn’t make a seen on the childish behavior

69
Q

What is your favorite movie?

A

Top Gun

70
Q

What was the best flight you ever had?

A

Back when I was training for my single engine sea plane. It was a calm evening and we was doing all the training for the different types of landing to do on the water and water operations. We was in a J3 Cub and we had the door open the entire time and it was really smooth air and it was a lot of fun. Some of the most fun I have had in an airplane.

71
Q

What does “low fares done right” mean to you?

A

Keeping the fares at a low price so everyone can have a affordable safe travel to where they want to go and the done right portion is that they get the same experience and safety as they would paying a lot of money for

72
Q

Why would you make a good captain?

A

High work ethic, safety minded, great customer service, solid pilot, interpersonal skills, and integrity
