What is the role of human resource management?
Finding and keeping a highly trained and motivated workforce whilst dealing with their work related issues i.e meeting the needs of employees whilst still promoting and achieving business goals
Define human resource management
The management of the relationship between employer and employee
How will human resources impact the other functions?
The quantity of staff it provides; the level of staff motivation it encourages; the prevalence of industrial disputes and action
How do the other functions impact HR?
Finance - determines the resources that are available to attract, reward and develop staff
Operations - determines the number of staff requires, their skills and working conditions
Marketing - determines the resources, number of staff required and skills needed
How is the human resource function managed?
Specialist managers/departments - create and implement HR policies for the whole business
Line managers - deal with issues related to staff in their area only
What is outsourcing?
Hiring external people/businesses to perform a particular function or activity; performed by contractors
What are the two types if contractors?
Domestic and global
What are the advantages of outsourcing?
Cost efficient due to specialisation and reduced on costs; expert knowledge in the area; access new networks and markets; increased flexibility
What are the disadvantages of outsourcing?
Not part of the business and may therefore hold different values, goals and standards; hidden costs and cost overruns; loss of direct contact with customers; limit business learning
What are the 7 indicators which can be used to assess the effectiveness of HR processes and strategies?
Staff turnover, absenteeism, worker satisfaction, accidents, benchmarking, corporate culture, disputation
What are the four steps in HR processes?
Acquisition, development, maintenance and separation
What are the three activities involved in acquisition?
Identifying staffing needs, recruitment and selection
What is the goal of development?
To expand employees skills, improve their capacity to perform and improve their overall productivity and quality of employee output
What two things does development involve?
Induction and training
What is the result of an effective induction process?
It will help new employees to settle in and become familiar with their new job allowing them to become productive more quickly
