Q

How is the ileum specialised for absorption?

A

Villi on the ileum wall - increase surface area
Microvilli on the surface of the villi - increase surface area
Villi wall once cell thick - short diffusion distance
Capillaries in villi maintain a high concentration gradient.
Lacteal in villi - absorption of fats

Q

How do you test the energy content of a food sample?

A

Measure out 25cm3 of water into a boiling tube.
Measure mass of food.
Measure starting temperature of food.
Set light to food using a Bunsen burner and hold under a boiling tube of water until it goes out.
Relight and repeat until it wont catch on fire.
Measure finishing temperature of water and calculate temperature change.
Energy content= volume of water X temperature change X 4.2 divided/ mass of food

A

Enzymes; antibodies in immune system; hormones; transport proteins e.g. haemoglobin; muscle

17
Q

Function of calcium in a balanced diet?

A

Used to make bones (as calcium phosphate)

18
Q

Deficient disease caused by lack of iron?

A

Anaemia

19
Q

Function of bile?

A

emulsifys fats - breaks large droplets into smaller droplets, increasing surface area and rate of digestion by lipase. Neutralises stomach acid

20
Q

Function of vitamin D in a balanced diet?

A

Helps with absorption of calcium

21
Q

Function of duodenum in digestive system?

A

Final site of digestion of carbs, fats, proteins - produces the enzyme maltase

22
Q

Where is maltase produced?

A

Ileum

23
Q

Which enzymes digest fats to fatty acids and glycerol?

A

Lipase

24
Q

Function of vitamin C?

A

Helps form connective tissue, holding organs together

25
Q

Where is amylase produced?

A

Pancreas and salivary glands

26
Q

Where is protease produced

A

Stomach lining and pancreas

27
Q

Function of mouth?

A

Chews food to break it into smaller pieces.
Produces saliva which makes it easier to swallow food. Saliva contains amylase

28
Q

Where is lipase produced?

A

Pancreas

29
Q

What is digestion?

A

Breakdown of large, insoluble molecules into small, soluble molecules

30
Q

Function of ileum?

A

Absorption of small, soluble molecules from the small intestine into the blood

31
Q

Egestion?

A

Removal of undigested food via the anus

32
Q

Function of iron?

A

Used to make haemoglobin

33
Q

Function of dietary fibre?

A

Keeps food moving through digestive system and prevents constipation

34
Q

Deficiency disease caused by lack of vitamin D?

A

Ricketts

35
Q

Function of colon?

A

Absorbs water into the blood

36
Q

Whee is bile made and stored?

A

Made in liver and stored in the gall bladder
