amino acids
5
Q
What elements do lipid molecules contain?
A
hydrogen, carbon and oxygen
6
Q
What are lipids made up of?
A
fatty acids and glycerol
7
Q
How do you make a food sample?
A
- Break up the food using a pestle and mortar
- Transfer the food to a beaker and add some distilled water
- Stir the mixture so that some food dissolves in the water
- Filter the solution using filter paper to get rid of the solid bits of food
8
Q
How do you test for glucose?
A
- Add Benedict’s solution to the food sample in a test tube
- Heat (by placing the test tube in a water bath)
- The solution will turn from blue to brick red if there is a high concentration of glucose
9
Q
How do you test for starch?
A
- Add iodine solution to the food sample
- If starch is present, the solution will turn from brown to blue-black
10
Q
How do you test for protein?
A
- Add biuret solution to the food sample
- If protein is present, the solution will turn from blue to purple
11
Q
How do you test for lipids?
A
- Add ethanol and distilled water to the food sample
- If lipids are present, a milky-white emulsion will form
12
