Human Nutrition Flashcards
What do Carbohydrates provide to the body?
They Provide Energy
What do Fats Provide to the body?
They Provide Building Materials, Energy Store, Insulation and Making Of Hormones
What do Proteins Provide to the Body?
They Provide Energy, Enzymes, Haemoglobin and Muscles
What is Enamel Made up of?
Calcium Salts, Strongest Tissue in the body
What is Pulp Cavity’s Task?
Contains Tooth Producing cells, blood vessels and nerve endings which detect pain
What is Dentine made up of?
Calcium Salts deposited on a framework of collagen fibres
What is Chemical Digestion?
Where enzymes are used to break down large insoluble food molecules into smaller soluble food molecules.
What is the task of Amylase and Where is it produced?
Breaks down starch in maltose, Produced in the Pancreas
What is the task of Protease and Where is it produced?
Breaks down proteins into peptides (by pepsin) and then into amino acids (by trypsin).
Pepsin is produced in stomach.
Trypsin is produced in pancreas.
What is the task of Lipase and where is it Produced?
Breaks down lipids in fatty acids and glycerol.
Produced in Pancreas
What is the Task of HydroChloric Acid?
Breaks down enzymes in harmful microorganisms in food.
Gives optimum PH value for pepsin to work efficiently
What is the Structure and Task of the Small Intestine?
Region of food absorption, folded into many villi to increase surface area for absorption.
What is the structure of a Villus?
1 villus has many tiny folds on the cells outside called microvilli
Function of Capillary
Transports Glucose and Amino Acids
Function of Vein
Delivers absorbed nutrients and delivers them to the liver via hepatic portal vein
