rational, independent human beings are rational, guided by pursuit of self-interest, ( egotistical individualism) mindful of others concerns. when individuals denied this, left demoralised and afflicted by wasted life

rationalism defines both genders- intellectually men and women are not very different
Stuart Mill?
though fundamentally rational, human nature is not fixed, it is forever progressing to a higher level
developmental individualism- focus on what individuals could become x had to become.
analysis- implications state should enable this, neo-liberals criticise saying leads to dependency culture, individuals have boundless potential

human nature has a clear social dimension, happiness derives from attending to happiness of others.
Rawls?
Capacity for genuine toleration and mutual respect. Mankind selfish yet empathetic
valuing both individual liberty and plight of those around them
Friedan?
human nature evolved in a way that discourages self-advancement amongst women, patriarchy has evolved, women cant progress
analysis- HN optimistic and rational, Rawls, all humans rational and empathetic so would behind “veil of ignorance” pick fair society. All agree individuals rational, all agree w mechanistic theory but cant agree what this rationality would lead to
