What has the government done to manage urban growth, slums and squatter settlements
In 2020 the Lagos state housing Corporation launched a scheme
- To provide affordable housing to low income family
- They aimed to provide 1,000 units of housing
- And the rehabilitation of existing housing
Why is the urban growth crisis hard to manage?
- People are undocumented so we don’t know the full extent
- People work in informal jobs meaning low wadges and so they can’t afford housing even if it is built
Why is providing clean water, sanitation systems and energy?
- The city’s infrastructure has been unable to keep up with the growing population meaning lack of services and overcrowding
- The sanitary systems are also not good leading to widespread environmental pollution and higher risk or disease
- The energy sector also faces challenges like frequent power outages, over reliance on diesel powered generators which lead to an increase of air pollution
How is providing clean water, sanitation systems and energy being managed?
- The government has launched initiatives to improve the city’s water treatment and upgrade pipe lines
- Private organisations like EkoAtlantic are creating new urban developments with modern infrastructure
- However it is counter intuitive because most can’t afford these housing
Why is managing clean water, sanitation systems and energy a challenge?
- There is limited capacity of the cities water treatment plants
- The cities pipe lines are old and prone to leaks and complications
