Dependency Load
The percentage of the population that is not working (lower than age 15 and higher than 64)
Life Expectancy at Birth
Average age a person can assume they will live to based on the population
Demography
The statistical study of human population.
Rate of Natural Increase
The difference between the number of live births and deaths in a given year. If there are more births the population is growing.
Pull Factor
The reason a person would come to a country (positive factor).
Push Factor
The reason a person would leave a country (negative factor).
Urban Area
A settlement area with a population greater than 1000, and a population density greater than 400 people/km2.
Rural Area
A settlement area with a population less than 1000 people, and a density of less than 400 people/km2.
Emigrant/Emigration
A person who moves permanently from one country to another (Exits FROM Canada creating population decline)
Immigrant/Immigration
A person who COMES to a new country to live (immigrate INTO Canada creating population growth)
Population Density
The number of people living in a particular place divided by the size of the area (in KM2).
Reserve
An area of land set aside for First Nations by treaties
Population Pyramid
A Population Pyramid is a graphical representation that shows the distribution of various age groups in a population.
Men are represented in blue, while women are in red.
It shows birth rate, death rate, life expectancy and infant mortality.
Overpopulation
When an excessive number of people strain available resources and facilities.
Migrants
Those that move their home from one place to another.
