Define site
The physical landscape on which a house/building is located.
Define situation
In relation to the surrounding area. What is close by?
Define location
Where a place is physically. Its coordinates on a map.
Define locale
Location that also takes into account the effect that people have on their setting. (How an area is shaped by people)
Define sense of place
The subjective and emotional attachment people have to a place. Differs depending on perspectives, experiences and knowledge.
Define place
A location with meaning. (At an individual, social or cultural level)
Define placemaking
The deliberate shaping of environment to facilitate social interaction and improve a communities quality of life.
Define lived experience
How somebody has experienced an area, having spent a substantial amount of time there.
Define insider
A person who has a sense of belonging to an area, that has developed from living in a location.
Define outsider
A person who does not feel they belong to an area. ( They may have never visited, or visited but never lived there).
Define globalisation
The interdependence of nations.
Define homogenised
Everything being the same.
Define clone town
One town is identical to the next, based on Highstreet chains and identical services.
Define placelessness
No sense of individuality in an urban area. One high street is the same as the next
Define glocalisation
Global scale companies adapting to suit local tastes.
Define endogenous factor
Factors that are local, internal characteristics which create a places identity.

Define exogenous factor
Factors that are external influences on a places identity. They are caused by a places relationship with other places.

People - Migrants or workers come from outside a place to live/work.
Capital - Investment from businesses outside the area.
Resources - Raw materials

A combination of a locations endogenous and exogenous factors

Data that is non-numerical, provides an insight to an areas sense of place.
