As a springtime settlement.
There are several springs at the base of the North Downs - Epsom is one of several towns and villages that grew up here.
This is known as a wet point site.

Lots of people who live in Epsom commute to work in London.

Through time Epsom has transitioned from a sparsely populated rural settlement to a densely populated urban settlement.
