Human Geography Flashcards
Human Geography
s the study of how we relate to
the earth and its systems
migration
People moving from one location to another
at any scale
pull factor
Reason to come (reason why the new place
is good)
push factor
Reason to leave (reason why the old place is
bad)
seasonal migration
Back and forth patterned movement that
follows seasons/weather
forced migration
Slavery and indentured servitude
chain migration
When people of the same/similar background
settle in the same location. This reduces the
uncertainty of migration
refugee
Someone that flees because they no longer
feel safe in their home country
migration field
Map of the locations that people from one
place move to
return migration
Moving back to native land (to stay)
diaspora
Large group of people who share a cultural
heritage but live somewhere else
internal migration
Movement within one country
step migration
Making incremental moves that are
increasingly drastic (rural - urban - big city -
international)
natural resources
Things from the earth that humans use for
economic gain
renewable resources
Resources that never run out (sun, wind,
water)
non-renewable resources
Resources that are limited
sustainability
Using resources in a responsible way with
future generations in mind
climate change
Extreme weather caused from the warming of
the earth - leading to more frequent and
drastic natural disasters
land use
How humans use and modify the land on
which they live
Environmental Determinism
Outdated theory in Human Geography that
says the environment is a sole determiner of
culture
Possibilism
Theory in Human Geography that says
culture can be influenced by the environment,
but it leaves room for other influencers
World Happiness Project
Report that ranks countries on their
happiness. Uses GDP per capita, healthy life
expectancy, freedom to make life choices,
social support, generosity, and absence of
corruption
Nordic Countries
Finland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden - often
score high on the World Happiness Project
Environmental modification
Humans changing the physical world to better
suit their needs
