Q

Explain what would happen to irrigation after continuing intensification of food production?

A

-Irrigation can cause problems if the soil is not properly managed. Extensive irrigation can lead to waterlogged.

-Waterlogging occurs when there is too much water that seeps into the soil which causes the soil to be oversaturated and the roots will be deprived of air and nutrients which will cause the roots to die.

-Salinisation occurs when water in the soil evaportes directly which leaves the salt behind. Salinisation also occurs followig irrigation if there is no proper drainage of excess water.

-The groundwater may reach the upper soil layers which brings up the dissolved salts from the ground. Saline soils are soils with high concentration of salts which cause the crops to have an inability to grow well.

-The problems of waterlogging and Salinisation have been observed in Murray-Darling Basin in Victoria,Australia.
