Ill-health:
Bad lifestyle choices can cause ill-health such as having unprotected sex can result in an STI, or smoking can result in lung cancer and abusing alcohol can result in liver disease.
Accidents:
Accidents are unplanned and happen unexpectedly. Some car accidents could be cause by drunk driving. Fire accidents can be caused by unsupervised candles. Burn accidents can be cause by boiling water or oil being left where a child can overturn the pot.
Crises
An emergency situation that causes distress and upheaval.
Disasters:
A great tragedy or devastation which can be caused by nature or people.
Psychological factors that cause ill-health.
Psychological factors are mental and emotional aspects of a human being. For example, if you a person has a low self-esteem and self image they can think they are not worthy enough to have safe sex and this can result in HIV.
Social factors that cause ill-health
- Gender-based violence can lead to injury and stress.
- Foetal alcohol syndrome, is caused by pregnant mothers consuming alcohol while pregnant. This can slow down the child’s development affect him/her later in life.
Religious factors that cause ill-health.
- Some religions forbid the use of condoms.
- Some religions tell their followers that illness is their fault and they have to pay a penance to show that they are sorry.
- Various portions and medicines are mixed but have not been scientifically tested.
Cultural practices that cause ill-health:
- Female genital mutilation
- Wife inheritance.
- Harmful practices are aimed at benefiting men and hating women.
What are lifestyle diseases?
Lifestyle disease is an illness linked to the way people live. It is a disease that can be prevented by changes in nutrition, environment and general lifestyle.
Cancers?
Cervical cancer in women
Lung cancer
Prostate cancer
Cervical cancer in women:
It forms in the cervix. It usually a slow growing cancer that may not have symptoms and detected during regular screenings.
Lung cancer:
Women are more vulnerable to lung cancer than men
Prostate Cancer in men:
Starts in the male prostate gland.
Symptoms:
Dribbling or leaking after urination
Bone pain in the lower back
Blood in urine or semen.
Hepatitis B
Most common serious liver infection and can lead to liver disease and liver cancer. Symptoms: Flu-like symptoms Tiredness Jaundice Dark urine No appetite
Hypertension
Very high blood pressure.
Tuberculosis
An ill-ness caused by a bacteria. It is spread through airborne infection droplets.
People living with HIV are at a greater risk of developing TB because their immune system can withstand the TB bacteria
Symptoms:
Coughing blood.
Fever
Loss of appetite and weight
Sexually transmitted infections including HIV and AIDS
STI’s are spread through the transfer of infected organisms from person to person during sexual contact.
