Human Eye Flashcards
Sclera
outer white layer, maintains eye shape, attaches to muscles
Choroid
contains blood vessels
Retina
contains light detecting cells, converts light to electrical signals
Aqueous humor
liquid, refracts light rays, maintains eye shape
Vitreous humor
liquid, refracts light, maintains eye shape
Iris
controls light entering eye, coloured ring
Pupil
black centre of eye, hole where light enters
Optic nerve
transmits messages from retina to brain
Optic disc
where optic nerves converge, exit eye
Macula lutea
yellow spot, rear retina, includes fovea centralis
Fovea centralis
contains no rod cells, best for sharp detailed daylight vision
Rod Cells
light sensitive, no colour, night vision
Cone cells
colour vision, detailed vision
Cornea
transparent and refracts light, in front of lens, iris
Lens
refracts light, helps focus light rays
Ciliary muscles
pulls choroid towards lens
