Definition of Human Development Index
A
A statistical index that measures a countries economic development.

What three factors is this based on?
A
- Health
*Education - Income.

How is health measured?
A
Life expectancy at birth.

How is education measured?
A
The mean schooling of adults aged 25+ and the expected years of schooling for those aged 5+.

How is income measured?
A
measured at real GNI per capter at purchasing power parity.

Advantages of HDI?
A
- Takes into account three key factors that are key for development
- relatively easy to calculate.

Disadvantages of HDI?
A
- Issues with the figures, such as the quality of life/ education not considered
- no consideration for income equality
- there are other factors that indicate development such as the environment.

Other indicators of development?
A
- Inequality- adjusted Human Development Index.
- MPI - measures % of population that is multidimensional poor. Uses a broader range of indicators for the three dimensions of HDI. Data not always available, doesn’t account for environment.
- Genuine Progress Indicator - 26 different indicators grouped into three like economic, environmental and social. Some believe this was made to build the anti-growth case.
