Advantages of HDI?

A
  • Takes into account three key factors that are key for development
  • relatively easy to calculate.

  • Issues with the figures, such as the quality of life/ education not considered
  • no consideration for income equality
  • there are other factors that indicate development such as the environment.

Other indicators of development?

A
  • Inequality- adjusted Human Development Index.
  • MPI - measures % of population that is multidimensional poor. Uses a broader range of indicators for the three dimensions of HDI. Data not always available, doesn’t account for environment.
  • Genuine Progress Indicator - 26 different indicators grouped into three like economic, environmental and social. Some believe this was made to build the anti-growth case.
