Gender
the array of socially constructed roles and relationships, personality traits, attitudes, behaviours, values, relative power and influence that society ascribes to the two sexes on a differential basis
Sex
the biological characteristics that define humans as female or male
Gender equality
the concept that all human beings, both women and men, are free to develop their personal abilities and make choices without the limitations set by stereotypes, rigid gender roles or prejudices
Empowerment
means that women and men can take control of their lives, set their own agendas, gain skills, increase self-confidence, solve problems and develop self-resilience
Gender equity
means that women and men are treated fairly according to their respective needs
Culture
a system of shared meanings used by people who beling to the same community, group or nation, to help them interpret and make sense of the world. These systems of meanings include language, religion, custom and tradition, as well as ideas about “place”
Cultural diffusion
the spread of cultural ideas, from their place of origin to other regions, groups or nations
