Human Breathing System Flashcards
What are air sac surrounded by?
Tiny blods vessels called capillaries.
? Passes from the ?into?.
? Passes from the ? into the ?, then it’s ?
Oxygen passes from the air sac into the blood, carbon dioxide passes from the blood into air sacs. It’s then breathed out.
What type of cells line in a healthy airway?
Mucus-secreting cells and ciliated cells.
What’s the function of mucus in the airway?
It traps dust particles and bacteria.
How do ciliated cells help maintain airway health?
Cilia sweep out mucus that traps dust and bacteria, clearing the airway.
What effect does smoking ? have on cilia?
Tar. It causes cilia to stick together.
How does smoking ? affect mucus secretion?
It increases mucus secretion.
What will happen if mucus built up in the airway?
It narrows the airway and makes it difficult for the air to pass, obstructing gas exchange.
Why is gas exchange affected in smokers?
Mucus may block the air sacs, preventing gas exchange.
What’s the single form of cilia?
Cilium.
