Human Breathing Flashcards
Why does breathing rate go below resting rate after exercise
Deeper breathing means co2 is exhaled and o2 is inhaled faster
What is homeostasis
The way an organism maintains a constant internal environment
Name the structures located at the end of the breathing tract involved in gaseous exchange
Alveoli
Identify the gas, soluble in blood plasma which controls the rate of breathing.
Carbon dioxide.
What are the adaptions for gas exchange
Curved shape of alveoli increases surface area for diffusion.
Walls of alveoli and capillaries are one cell thick, faster diffusion
Warm, moist air in alveoli faster diffusion
Explain the process of exhalation and inhalation
Inhalation
- intercostal muscles and diaphragm contract
- rib cage swings up and out
-Diaphram flattens
Volume in chest cavity increases
-pressure in chest cavity decreases
- air is taken in through nose/mouth
Exhalation
- intercostal muscles and diaphram relax
-rib cage swings down and inward
-diaphram curves inward
-volume in chest cavity decreases
-pressure of chest cavity increases
-air is forced out through nose/mouth.
