Human Body Systems : Muscle, Skin, Skeletal Flashcards
A substance in the center of bone that makes blood cells
Marrow
Any place where two or more bones meet
Joint
A thick band of tissue that holds bones together at joints
Ligament
Organs that relax and contracts, a result, body parts, move, energy is used, and work is done
Muscles
Muscles that you can control. Example : leg and arms.
Voluntary muscles
Any muscle that that cannot be controlled. Example: muscles that help you breathe, digestion, pump your blood.
Involuntary muscles
Tough bands of tissue that attaches bones to muscles are
Tendons
What are the three types of muscle tissue?
Skeletal muscle, smooth muscle, cardiac muscle
Attached to bones by tendons most numerous in the body
Skeletal muscle
Involuntary muscles contract and relax slowly
Smooth muscle
And involuntary muscle, that is only found in the heart
Cardiac muscle
5 Functions of the Skin
~Protects from physical and chemical injury
~Sensory response
~Formation of vitamin D
~Regulates body temperature
~Rids the body of wastes (sweat, etc.)
The human skeleton has how many bones
206
Bones are made up of living tissue
Living tissue
tough tight fitting membrane that covers the outer surface of a bone important in growth and repair
Periosteum
Found towards the ends of the bones, has many small spaces that make the bone lightweight
Spongy bone
Thick, smooth layer that covers the ends of your bones. Protects joints, absorbs shock and makes movement easier
Cartilage
The hard, strongest part of the bone
Compact bone
break in the bone. Can be a crack or actual break that can break through the skin
Fracture
And I was little or no movement. Example: the cranium and pelvis.
Immovable joint
Allows the body to make a wide range of movement.
Movable joints
What are the several types of movable joints?
Pivot, Ball and socket, Hinge, Gliding
One bone rotates in a ring of another bone, example head/neck
Pivot
One bone has a rounded end that fits into a cup like the cavity of another bone. Ex: shoulder, hip
Ball and socket
Back-and-forth movement. Example: elbows, knees, fingers.
Hinge
One part of a bone glides over another. Example: wrists, ankles, between vertebrae.
Gliding
Five important functions of the skeletal system
*provides shape and support
*allows movement
*protects tissues and organ
*stores minerals (calcium and phosphorus)
*produces red blood cells
How many muscles does the human body have
600
What are the most muscles in the human body?
Skeletal muscles
Vitamin D helps absorb what
Calcium
Your skeleton gives shape, and what to your body
Support
What are your bones protect?
Your internal organs
Major what are attached to your bones?
Muscles
What is formed in the marrow
Blood cells
What two compounds are stored in your skeleton
Calcium and phosphorus
