Human Body Systems Flashcards
What is the purpose of the respiratory system?
Absorbs oxygen and gets rid of carbon dioxide.
What is the purpose of the circulatory system?
Distributed blood containing oxygen and nutrients.
What is the purpose of the kidneys?
Gets rid of waste and regulates the amount of water in the body.
What is the purpose of the digestive system?
To break down food.
What is the purpose of the nervous system?
Transmits messages throughout the body.
What’s your body’s first line of defense?
Skin.
What’s your body’s second line of defense?
Circulatory system.
What’s your body’s line of defense when a virus gets into your blood stream?
Your white blood cells find a destroy the virus.
How does oxygen enter a multicellular animal?
By diffusing across the cell membrane.
How do special cells move fluid?
By working together.
What is the respiratory system responsible for?
Absorbing oxygen from air and removing carbon dioxide from body.
What are the main organs in the respiratory system?
Trachea (windpipe), lungs, and diaphragm.
What does a circulatory system do?
Brings every cell into almost direct contacts with oxygen and nutrients.
What else does the circulatory system do?
Carries blood around body.
What is excretion?
Cells working together to remove waste.
If a cell didn’t remove waste, what would happen?
The cell would poison itself and die.
What does the liver produce?
Nutrients and ammonia, a poisonous gas.
What else does the excretory system do?
Regulates water in the body.
What is digestion?
Process that the body uses to break down food.
Where does an animal get its’ food?
From other organisms and food products.
What does saliva do?
Moistens the food to make food easier to chew and digest.
What are cells organised into?
Tissue, organs, and organ systems.
