Human Body Science - Ways In Which The Organ Systems Interact Flashcards
The 11 organ systems in the human body work together to carry out the following necessary functions of human life.
Maintaining boundaries Responding to environmental changes Moving Ingesting and digesting Reproducing Growing Excreting Metabolizing
Describe how the body maintains boundaries
Cells are eukaryotic (have a semipermeable membrane)
Membrane restricts what can pass through/into the cells
i.g. integumentary system, linings of body cavities or organs.
Describe how the body responds to environmental changes
Voluntary and involuntary response to external stimuli.
Movement away from danger - voluntary
Automatic removal of hand from painful stimuli before the brain perceives the pain - involuntary
Describe how the body moves
Muscular tissue supports movement of the body.
skeletal muscle - voluntary movement
muscles in cardiovascular, digestive, reproductive, urinary and respiratory systems - involuntary movement
Describe how the body ingests and digests
Digestive system works to remove nutrients from food and transport those to other parts of the body using the cardiovascular system
Describe how the body reproduces
Reproductive system mostly controls but relies on hormone (endocrine)
Describe how the body grows
Growth controlled by by several systems.
- skeletal and muscular change shape
- digestive system provides nutrients
- cardiovascular system provides nutrient transport
- endocrine system releases hormones congtrolling timing and amount of growth
Describe how the body excretes
Waste from digestion is removed by both the digestive and urinary systems
Describe how the body metabolizes
Metabolism - use of energy as a result of chemical reactions within the cells
- The digestive and respiratory systems supply nutrients and oxygen needed for metabolism
- Cardiovascular system provides transport of materials
- Endocrine system regulates metabolism through hormones secreted in glands
