Human body Flashcards
What is a cell?
The basic unit of all living things
What is a tissue?
A group of similar cells performing a specific task. For example: muscle tissue produces movement.
What are organs?
Two or more kinds of tissue that together perform special body functions. For example, skin is an organ composed of epithelial, connective tissue, and nervous tissue.
What is a body “system”?
A group of organs that work together to perform a complex body function. For example, the nervous system is made up of the brain, spinal cord and nerves.
Where is the cranial cavity?
A space inside the skull or cranium containing the brain.
What is in the thoracic cavity?
heart, lungs, esophagus, trachea, bronchi, thymus
What is in the abdominal cavity?
Lowest portion of the esophagus, the stomach, intestines, kidneys, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, and ureters.
What is in the pelvic cavity?
Urinary bladder, certain reproductive organs, part of the large intestine, and the rectum.
What are membranes?
the internal spaces of the organs and tubes that open to the outside and line body cavities.
Name the five types of membranes?
Mucous membranes,
Serous membrane,
Synovial membrane,
Meninges
Cutaneous membrane
Where are mucous membranes?
They line the interior walls of the organs and tubes that open to the outside of the body.
Where are serous membranes?
They line the cavities including the thoracic cavity and internal organs.
What serous membrane covers the lungs?
pleura
What serous membrane covers the heart?
pericardium
Where are synovial membranes?
They line joint cavities and are composed of connective tissue. They secrete synovial fluid into joint cavity so that bones can move freely.
