Human Body Flashcards
Dendrites:
receives messages from the connecting neuron (chemical messages)
Cell body/soma:
Maintains Neurons structure and provides energy to the neuron
Nucleus:
contains genetic information
Myelin sheath:
protects the axon to allow chemical messengers to be transmitted quickly and efficiently
Axon:
Conducts electrical messages away from the cell body
Axon terminal:
releases the messages across the synapse to adjacent neurons.
Synapse:
small gap between two neurons also referred as synaptic gap.
- Can I describe the 5 steps in a stimulus-response question for any voluntary reaction?
Stimulus, receptor, Control centre, effector, response
Involuntary reaction:
Stimulus, receptor, Interneuron, effector, response
Can I state 3 causes of a spinal cord injury (SCI)
Fall from a height, car crash, sport injuries.
3 possible consequences on the body on SCI injury?
Low blood pressure, The brain and nervous system doesn’t function as well, legs can be tingling or numb
Why is it important for a reflex reaction (involuntary response) to be faster?
It is faster to either avoid danger or minimise any damage from harmful conditions.
Parathyroid:
produce parathyroid hormone, which plays a key role in the regulation of calcium levels in the blood.
Thyroid gland:
regulates growth and energy expenditure
Adrenalgland:
regulate your metabolism, immune system, blood pressure, response to stress and other essential functions.
